Mariana Boscariol is currently a post-doctoral research associate on the “Living on the Edge” project at the University of Manchester. Apart from a period of 6 months in Japan, she lived and studied in Lisbon for the previous 6 years, where she was working at the Centre for the Humanities (CHAM) and concluded her PhD from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (2018). At present, I am working on a British Academy (BA) funded project entitled “Living on the Edge: experiences and responses to Europe’s changing borderlands” (PI Dr Edmond Smith) at the University of Manchester. The project investigates the ways individuals and communities living on the edges of Europe – especially in port cities and transport hubs – experienced trade, migration and sovereignty in their day-to-day lives. The project undertakes a comparative study of two specific borderland regions: the Gulf of Guinea and the Sino-Russian borderlands during the early modern/modern period.

In what regards my personal research interests, currently what I seek is to diversify and enhance my competences in the European and East Asian dimension of the Early Modern era in dialogue with the changes Iberian empires were passing through in the 17th century - having an attentive view not only on the economic practices sustained in that period but also on the current relations between both regions. My main interests in research are cross-cultural and economic history, exploring categories such as governance, commerce, borders, and circulation from ´local`, ´regional` and ´global` dynamics in East Asia.
