Maria João Castro has a PhD in Contemporary Art History and is a researcher and member of CHAM (Centre for the Humanities) at FCSH-UNL (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon). She has a Masters in Contemporary Art History, a post-graduate diploma in International Relations and a degree in Tourism Management. She is an invited lecturer at FCSH-UNL where she has supervised Masters and PhD theses. She has published articles in journals and indexed websites and is the author/coordinator of several books. Castro has also been a member of scientific committees and organised or taken part in activities held in Portugal, Spain, France, Scotland, Italy, Romania, Dubai, Brazil, New Zealand and Zanzibar. Her fields of specialisation focus on Art History and Contemporary Culture, particularly the connection between Art and Power, in relation to Travel and (Post) Colonial Studies and Dance.
She is currently Co-coordinator of the “Contemporary Tourist Gazes” research group from the project The Museums, Patrimony and Tourism | INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH NETWORK (https://mptourismresearch.wordpress.com/research/) and is a postdoc researcher holding an FCT scholarship for the project “ArTravel.
