ADVANCED COURSES AND EDUCATION FOR SCIENCE

Activity type: Training, Transfer of knowledge, Communication and Dissemination

Leader: André Teixeira (FCSH)

Sub-leader: Inês Coelho (FCSH)

Partner organizations:

Post-graduate studies should be developed by FCSH (Portugal), Uninorte (Colombia), ODU (USA), UPO (Spain), UFS-LAAA (Brazil), and TCD (Ireland), EVHA (France). Advanced training will include FCSH (Portugal), Uninorte (Colombia) and UPO (Spain) at academic level, IPC (Cape Verde) and MARAPA (Sao Tome and Principe) at non-academic level.

Objectives:

The university institutions in this project have post-graduation programs, which embody their work themes and approaches. We shall highlight: the master in Latin American history and the PhD in history of Europe and America, in the Universidad Pablo de Olavide; master and PhD in History, in the field of Portuguese Expansion History (with an e-learning version), and in Archaeology, with a special focus in post-medieval and maritime archaeology, in the NOVA University of Lisbon; a post-graduation in archaeology, also directed to the underwater archaeology, in the Universidad del Norte and in the Universidade Federal de Sergipe. There are already connexions between the Universidad Pablo de Olavide and the NOVA University of Lisbon’s programs (since 2011), as well as between those in the Universidad del Norte and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (since 2015), based on the UNESCO chair’s network. In addition, Trinity College Dublin and Old Dominion University’ skills in the maritime and environment history fields must be underlined. Thus, the first major objective of this WP is to densify this network of collaboration in the advanced formation domain in all these fields, involving all academic CONCHA partners. Our aim is to create the base for a future integrated program of post-graduation in the area of oceans’ cultural heritage, competitive on an international level. This program is conceived in an interdisciplinary approach, relating history, archaeology, arts and anthropology; clearly engaged in the Atlantic and its different dimensions, using the diverse experience of the partners; and with a strong methodological and practical component, applied to the heritage management. Also, we notice that many Atlantic countries have a great potential concerning its maritime heritage, despite its scarce technical and scientific resources to know and manage this legacy. Although a lot of these are equipped with structures in the cultural and scientific areas, at a governmental, academic or even aside with civil society level, they do not have a tradition in approaching the maritime culture or do not dispose specialized human resources in those themes. In this situation are some of the countries represented in the present project, like Cape Vert and São Tomé e Príncipe, to which can be added others, that also maintain contacts with the UNESCO chair, like Morocco or Namibia, responsible for huge heritage legacies, but that do not want to miss the chance to say a word on the management of their collections. There is not much offer in training the technical staff in the existing public bodies. Therefore, the second grand objective of this WP is to create advanced training in the domain of ocean´s cultural heritage for national, municipal or non-governmental technicians, including museums and heritage management professionals, and also school teachers, such as non-academic partners of CONCHA. Our goal is for this activity to have a local and national impact, developing this type of actions in Cape Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe and Colombia. These actions will take place in the context of cooperation missions in the research domain in other WP of this project. At this level we do not ambition the formation of specialists in these areas, but mainly to bring awareness to the existing professionals to these themes and give them some work tools to manage and promote good practices in the field. The resulting experience from the connection between the academic and non-academic institutions in this project framework will be a good topic of reflection in relation to the promotion of international conventions that regulate the underwater cultural heritage.
