Abstract:

Giovan Battista Sidotti (1668-1715) landed on Yakushima in 1708, disguised as a samurai. He was captured and first sent to Nagasaki and the next year to Edo (Tokyo) in the Kirishitan yashiki. There he was questioned by a Japanese Confucian scholar Arai Hakuseki (1657-1725), who, after their four conversations, wrote the Seiyo kibun in 1715. In this work there are some elements and aspects that describe Portugal and the lusophone culture in East Asia.
