De re militari
06:00 pm | Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal Results of the project «De Re Militari: From Military Literature to the Battlefield Imagery in the Portuguese Space (1521-1621)»

This conference presents the results of the FCT project on the constructed image of the battlefield in Portugal during the 16th and 17th centuries. Through an analytical-comparative study of images and narratives, a martial imaginary was explored.

A comprehensive survey of written and iconographic sources was conducted, and the reception of narrative and visual models in the construction of the image of the Portuguese-influenced battlefield between 1521-1621 was meticulously analyzed.

The prosecution of war is a tool of power, and the updating of factors associated with combat - such as tactical devices, modernity of weaponry, or the quality of armament - becomes part of the same process of affirmation. However, war is not limited to the act of warfare itself, focusing solely on the study of weaponry and tactics. It is a specific form of communication, a visual spectacle of self-affirmation and intimidation, and also a way of occupying space, following its own rules and shaping a certain architecture of battle. The emergence of new forms of combat, the prominence of Art, the impact of the printing press as a facilitator of the circulation of written word, and the contact with different geographies make the Renaissance an era in which the relationship between Art and War is particularly relevant.
