The Origins of European Expansion: Ceuta, 1415
Campus Universitário de Ceuta

The Capture of Ceuta in 1415 by the Portuguese army under the command of D. Joao I marks the beginning of the Portuguese overseas expansion, which other European kingdoms will incorporate later in history.

This event initiates a phase of deep political, social, economic, scientific and ideological transformation which are rooted in the medieval world but which consequences are still present in today’s world.

Aware of the importance of this historical phenomenon, the Institute of Ceuta Studies in collaboration with other universities and academic institutions calls for the international scientific community to reflect on the origins of this process from a multidisciplinary perspective.
