4th Cycle of Lectures01.04.2014
Luso-Italian Relations during the Medieval and Early Modern Periods
Diplomacy and the Circulation of Elites (15th-18th centuries)

The wide array of presentations at the 3rd cycle, focusing on the circulation routes of goods, people and ideas, raised important clues and highlighted issues that deserve further development in a dedicated cycle. The current cycle of lectures is focused on an issue that in recent years had an important development, finding its own space separated from the traditional diplomatic history: the diplomatic relations between Iberian and Italian Peninsulas in its different aspects. The space was extended to the Iberian Peninsula, given the known importance of the ambassadors of the various Italian States based in Madrid who, through an extensive and detailed correspondence, kept their government up to date. Less well known is the role of the "gentiluomini", the consuls and sometimes the merchants who managed the circulation of information between the two peninsulas through finely organised networks which, for six decades, were part of a single Monarchy.
