Lords of the Seas: The Human-Shark Relationship from a Zooarchaeological Perspective
Sharks are top predators that have inhabited the planet’s seas for around 450 million years. At a certain point in the evolutionary process, their existence intersected with that of the only predator capable of threatening their continued presence on Earth—the human being.
The predation of sharks by humans dates back to prehistory. The study of skeletal remains found at archaeological sites allows us to understand which taxa were exploited for food, adornment production, or other purposes.
This work presents a synthesis of the presence of this group in archaeological sites across Portuguese territory, covering a chronology of over 70,000 years (ca. 75,000 BP – 15th century AD).
