This meeting aims to bring together, discuss, and disseminate ongoing research carried out within the framework of the EDGES Project, which focuses on the relationships between Indigenous peoples and colonial — and later republican — institutions. We approach state institutions—particularly during the colonial period—in both their civil and religious dimensions, which often appear intertwined.
The goal is to highlight the various Indigenous strategies in response to state apparatuses (including ecclesiastical institutions), and vice versa — to emphasize the agency of Indigenous societies and the diversity of their positions toward the State and the Church.
The event seeks to shed light on the continuities and ruptures in these intersocietal relations, emphasising Indigenous capacities for interaction with and access to state institutions, while also assessing the effectiveness of state policies of co-optation and domination.
