This seminar aims to reflect on and discuss recent historiography on the actions of viceroys and governors in Iberian imperial spaces between the 16th and 18th centuries. Greater attention has been given to the specific configurations of each territory and local populations, while the relationship between these royal representatives and justice is also the subject of renewed interest.
Programme:
- Nuno Camarinhas (Universidade dos Açores, CHAM, FCSH): Governing for justice: interactions between governors and magistrates in Portuguese America and the State of India.
- Luis Miguel Costa Vigo (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú): Authority, power and conflict: the construction of the viceregal government in Peru and the dynamics of negotiation with local populations.
- João Henrique Ferreira de Castro (Colégio Pedro II, Rio de Janeiro): “Until natural death inclusive”: The critical situation of the State of Brazil and the powers conferred upon Viceroy Vasco Fernandes César de Meneses.
- Hélida Santos Conceição (Universidade do Estado da Bahia, Pós-Doc CNPQ): Government and normative production in the State of Brazil: The political communication of Viceroy Vasco Fernandes César de Menezes (1720–1735).
