Urban indigenous worlds in Iberian America (18th century)

This seminar proposes to examine the indigenous presence in different Ibero-American urban contexts. It proposes to take a closer look at the various social, economic and political spaces inhabited and invested by indigenous peoples in towns and cities throughout the 18th century.
 

Programme:

 

- Teresa Vergara Ormeño (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú): Cofradía gremial vs. gremio: conflicto y control del oficio entre los silleros indígenas de Lima (1744–1800)

 

- Soraia Sales Dornelles (Universidade Federal do Maranhão): Indigenous urbanities in the captaincy of Maranhão under the Pombaline Directory.

 

- Felipe Garcia (CHAM, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa): Neither administrado nor slave: labour, exploitation and indigenous struggles in the courts of São Paulo in the 18th century.
