Interest in the question of Azorean identity constitutes a historical phenomenon situated primarily within the contemporary period, resulting from a gradual awareness of the Azores’ distinctive social, political, and cultural condition within the national context. This awareness has been shaped through metacultural, literary, artistic, and symbolic discourses, practices, and representations that contributed to the formulation and consolidation of Azorean identities.
Integrated into the commemorations of the 50th Anniversary of Azorean Autonomy, and serving simultaneously as a starting point for the celebrations marking the 600th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Azores, this round table proposes a moment of historical and anthropological reflection on the processes through which Azorean identities have been constructed, questioning their historical foundations, their forms of expression, and their continued relevance in the present.
The event brings together contemporary historians, an art historian, and an anthropologist, moderated by the journalist Rui Pedro Paiva.
