The oceans are much more than just a backdrop: they are an integral part of the experiences, imaginations and transformations that have shaped the human journey through time. This activity is based on this premise, centred on the ‘blue side’ of history. Throughout the activity, we will seek to show how the sea and various species deeply embedded in the human imagination such as whales, manatees, dolphins and seals have influenced the way different societies, from the period of European maritime expansion to the present day, have observed, represented and interacted with the natural world. Through this exploration, we also aim to highlight the importance of environmental history in reconstructing broader narratives of coexistence, empathy and sustainability, contributing to a more balanced reflection on the relationships between humanity and nature.
Two researchers from the 4-OCEANS project, who are affiliated with CHAM – Centre for the Humanities at NOVA – FCSH, Diogo Falcato and André Carvalho, will be in attending; along with Teacher / Researcher Hilarino da Luz (Dr. José Afonso Secondary School, Seixal / CHAM, NOVA FCSH) and Teacher Luísa Gracioso (Dr. José Afonso Secondary School, Seixal).
