The winds that sustained Lisbon
NOVA FCSH is taking part in Open House Lisboa 2026 with an urban tour dedicated to Lisbon’s old windmills, led by Leonor Medeiros, lecturer in the Department of History and researcher at CHAM.
Starting from Moinho do Penedo in Monsanto, the walk takes in the traces and memories of the western part of the city, inviting you to rediscover those that remain in the landscape — some reduced to ruins, others converted into dwellings, memorials or political symbols — and to understand their role in the old supply networks.
The initiative stems from the LisVentos project — Archaeology and the Sustainable Future of Lisbon’s Windmills, developed by NOVA FCSH, CHAM and APAI, with the support of various organisations.
The tour also highlights the work carried out by students on the Archaeology degree course at NOVA FCSH, who have been involved in surveying, documenting and interpreting these mills, thereby actively contributing to our understanding and appreciation of this heritage and its history.
