In recent decades the subject of empires has experienced a new impulse, partly associated with the surge of Atlantic history, world history and global history - and the corresponding criticisms - but also stemming from the notion that it is not possible to think world history without a reference to the formation and ideologies of empires.

This volume analyses the unity of the Atlantic world and the impact of the reforms attempted in the 18th century, particularly in the Iberian spaces, along with ‘frondas’ and uprisings, and the Napoleonic wars, on the gradual transformation of the relations between the European political centres and their peripheries, and on the imperial disintegration in the Atlantic world at the dawn of a new century.
