Cargos e Ofícios nas Monarquias Ibéricas: Provimento, Controlo e Venalidade (Séculos XVII-XVIII)

This book, just like the international seminar that preceded it, aims at analysing issues related to the administration of the Iberian monarchies in the 17th and 18th centuries, addressing aspects that still deserve further research.

Researchers from several Spanish and Portuguese institutions who participated in the event held at CHAM/UNL-UAc, and who subsequently contributed to this volume, belong to the group of historians dedicated to studying three specific aspects of administrative and institutional history: the appointment to positions in the Iberian kingdoms and their conquests, the control exercised by the crowns over the actions of the men appointed to represent them, and finally, the royal or private venality of such ‘public’ positions. These subjects are analysed separately in this publication, but they are nevertheless intertwined and mutually conditioning aspects. It is hoped that the results of the research presented hereby, some of which refer to previously scarcely known subjects, will contribute to shedding new light on past ‘public administration’.
