Aquém e Além da Taprobana. Estudos luso-orientais à memória de Jean Aubin e Denys Lombard

All the contributors to this volume were disciples of either Aubin or Lombard. They learned a great deal from them, not only about science but, above all, about the art of doing science by questioning history.

Apart from the first three studies in the compilation, which analyse aspects of the internal, political, cultural or social life of 16th-century Portugal, all the other papers focus on this subtle frontier between Europe and the world, which was everywhere while being nowhere.

This volume also includes the annotated edition of the letters from Sultan Bahadur of Guzerate to King John III and Nuno da Cunha, written in Persian and kept at the Torre do Tombo National Archive, of an Ottoman missive written in Greek and of a series of documents about the Portuguese in Sunda in the 1520s. It further includes the translation of the parts of a Javanese chronicle dealing with the same period, which was crucial for the Islamisation of Java. A full bibliography of both authors is included.
