André Murteira is a researcher at CHAM. He is currently working on an individual research project titled "Ships and War: Dutch and Iberian War Fleets in the Dutch-Iberian Global Conflict (1600-1669)", funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), through the Individual Scientific Employment funding programme (reference:2021.02332.CEECIND).

He has an MA in the history of Portuguese overseas expansion from the NOVA FCSH on the subject of Dutch privateering against Portuguese navigation between Europe and Asia from 1595 to 1625. His MA dissertation was the basis for his published book A Carreira da Índia e o Corso Neerlandês, 1595–1625 (Lisbon: Tribuna da História, 2012).

He has a PhD in history at the NOVA FCSH on the subject of Dutch privateering against Portuguese navigation in Asia in the first quarter of the seventeenth century (2016). He benefited from a grant from Fundação Oriente (Portugal) to do his MA and from another from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia – Ministério da Educação e Ciência (Portugal) for his PhD (reference: SFRH/BD/36004/2007).

He has published in journals such as Journal of Military History, Tijdschrift voor Zeegeschiedenis, Análise Social, and Anais de História de Além-Mar. He edited with Hélder Carvalhal and Roger Lee de Jesus the book The First World Empire: Portugal, War and Military Revolution (London: Routledge, 2021).
