NOVA RESEARCH PORTAL
My research focuses on the study of textiles in Portugal in the Early Modern Age. Until recently I focused on the production of Chinese textile exports to the Portuguese market and currently I’m a post-doctoral fellow at CHAM, with a project financed by FCT (SFRH / BPD / 76288 / 2011) entitled Between Utility and deleight: the textile heritage in the house of Braganza (16th-18th centuries) with the aim to study the usage of textiles within Portuguese aristocracy.
Aware of the significant investment of the Portuguese in textiles during this period, I am interested to understand the real role of textile furnishings in Portuguese daily life, the motivations that contribute to the valuation, acquisition and the display of these items in such an expressive way as well as determine the sort of commodities to which the Portuguese had access and the trends and tastes of buyers.
