Principal Investigator at CHAM – Centre for Humanities. He completed his Master's degree in Historical Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, New University of Lisbon (2002) and his doctorate in History at the European University Institute (2007), with a thesis on criminology and fascism that examined the relationship between state control and the production of scientific knowledge. This research was published as Crime and the Fascist State (Routledge, 2016).

 

Between 2014 and 2025, at the Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, he led projects that exemplify interdisciplinary approaches, particularly from the anthropology of mental health and social studies of science, including the analysis of the social construction of medical authority in Portugal (2014-2019, FCT funding). As FCT Principal Investigator of the project “Psychological Suffering and Human Rights”, he coordinated a team focused on knowledge co-production between scientific actors, policy-makers and activists. He was also part of the REMEMBER project team – “Experiences of Elderly LGBTQ People in Democratic Portugal (1974-2020)”. Since 2025, he has been part of the EcoGrief project team – “Echographies of Mourning: Assessing Intangible Loss and Climate Distress in Rural Portugal”.

 

Director of Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais in 2024 and 2025, he is also founder and coordinator of Mad in Portugal, a platform dedicated to disseminating critical perspectives on mental health and psychiatric practices. He is the author of numerous scientific articles published in journals such as Transcultural Psychiatry, History of Psychiatry, Análise Social and Archives de Sciences Sociales des Religions, among others.
