Graça Almeida Borges is a Tenured Assistant Researcher at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in History from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy). She is a historian of early modern empires, whose research has focused primarily on the impact of the Iberian Union (1580–1640) on Portuguese territories in Asia, the role of violence and resistance in the Portuguese colonial process, and the ways in which these dynamics contributed to the dissemination of the Portuguese black legend in early modern Europe, thereby shaping the collective memory of the Portuguese empire over time. In her work, she consistently seeks a global, connected, and comparative perspective. She has built extensive experience through the participation in and coordination of national and international research projects and scientific activities. Her research has been funded by the European University Institute, the European Commission, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Fundação Oriente, and the John Carter Brown Library. She previously held teaching and research positions at Autónoma University of Lisbon, NOVA School of Business and Economics and at the Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Cultures and Societies (CIDEHUS), of the University of Évora.
