From Nature to the Museum. Naturalists and explorers in the 18th and 19th centuries
9:30 am | MUHNAC - Manuel Valadares Auditorium

The seminar "From Nature to the Museum. Naturalists and explorers in the 18th and 19th centuries" is an opportunity to listen to Professor Rafael Sagredo, National History Award 2022 of Chile and to learn and debate with his knowledge about naturalists and explorers in the American continent at the end of modernity.

But this meeting does not only want to focus on Chile and the American continent, it wants to make a bridge with our country and also with the present, with science, objects and museums. Listen to contributions from national colleagues who also reflect on the constitution of collections and museums. Has the museum actually evolved directly from the Cabinets of Wonders to the National Museums? Was art the driving force? What role did science play? Or even the transition from kingdoms to nations that would lead, in the 19th century, to the transformation of History itself and the creation of Archaeology as disciplines directed by material culture, which would nourish a scientific conception of Museum.
