ERC Synergy Grant - 4-OCEANS 05.11.2020 to 26.11.2020
CHAM wins, for Portugal, the first ERC Synergy Grant in the Humanities with the 4-OCEANS project.
4-OCEANS receives 10 M Euros of European funding to research the past of the oceans.

The project, led in Portugal by Cristina Brito (CHAM/NOVA FCSH), has other 3 principal investigators, Poul Holm and Francis Ludlow, from Trinity College Dublin (Center for Environmental Humanities at Trinity), and James Barrett from Cambridge University (Department of Archeology).

4-OCEANS aims to understand the history of marine life over two millennia and to analyze its role and importance for human societies. It will study 4 oceans: the Arctic, the Atlantic, the Indian and the Pacific and will focus on 10 taxonomic groups.

This is a synergy research. It crosses, besides chronologies and geographies, several methodological approaches. It is an interdisciplinary project involving 30 researchers from areas as diverse as archaeology and zooarchaeology, molecular biology, marine environmental history, historical ecology, economics, social and scientific history, geography and historical climatology, as well as modelling and digital humanities.

4-OCEANS is a current and urgent project that will provide answers to societal and environmental issues and challenges of the coming years and decades.
