Exhibition 12.11.2018
«Between the cross and the crescent: the redemption of captives»
Open until January 25 at Antigos Paços do Concelho, Lagos
The convent of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity was founded in Lisbon in 1218. The Order, established in France at the end of the twelfth century with the aim of redeeming Christians taken captive in Muslim territories, rose to prominence in Portugal before becoming extinct in the nineteenth century.
This exhibition acknowledges captivity as a feature common to both the Christian and the Islamic societies, the roots of which are found in armed conflict and the raids by pirates and corsairs. It explains the role of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity in the redemption and exchange of captives.
