Estado da Índia encompassed East African coast from its foundation until 1752, forwarding the already existing connections between the Portuguese crown and African kingdoms. Western Indian shores have long been a meeting place and commercial crossroad for Africans, Indians and Europeans, providing advantageous human and cultural exchanges. The Island of Mozambique was the center of the Portuguese presence in the Eastern coast of Africa and ground for the territorial settlement in the Zambezi basin as well as one of the main ports of the intercontinental voyages fostered by the India Run.
This historical, geographical, and cultural background is the main focus of the XV International Seminar on Indo-Portuguese History, commemorating its 40th anniversary, and celebrating the second centenary of the Island of Mozambique town.
