The Portuguese National Library will host between 10 and 11 May 2018 an International Symposium dedicated to the figure and work of Jaime Cortesão. This initiative will be centered on the civic action and scientific work that Jaime Cortesão carried out during the three decades in which he remained exiled following the establishment of the dictatorship in Portugal and his consequent compulsory removal from office as Director of the National Library of Lisbon in 1927.
It is intended to create an opportunity to present the latest results of the research carried out around the work of the author of Alexandre de Gusmão and the Treaty of Madrid and the History of Brazil on the old maps. It is also intended to deepen the knowledge about the successive contexts of exile that Jaime Cortesão faced in Europe and Brazil, especially those that took place in Republican Spain and Rio de Janeiro in the 1940s and 1950s. This initiative will also be an opportunity to reflect on the important legacy of Cortesão as editor and translator, as well as to analyze the current state of the projects for editing his work.
The International Symposium «Jaime Cortesão: writings and geographies of exile» is a joint initiative of the Center for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon (CEG-ULisboa) and the CHAM — Center for the Humanities of the New University of Lisbon and the University of the Azores (CHAM / NOVA FCSH and UAc), in partnership with the Portuguese National Library. This initiative is carried out as part of the activities of the FCT / CAPES Research Project ‘Geographical knowledge and institutional geography: influence and reciprocal relations between Portugal and Brazil in the 20th century’ (CEG-ULisboa) and CHAM’s the research group ‘Reading and Forms of Writing’.
