Envisaged by many scholars as the opening event in the 20th century, the Great War has been, on the occasion of its centenary, the object of academic initiatives covering a wide range of topics, from modern war technologies to geopolitical change both in the international order and in Atlantic relations. Being an insular and Atlantic country, as well as the historic stage of naval warfare, Portugal could not be exempted from such a debate, which explains the intent to promote a Conference on The Great War and the Atlantic Borders. The Islands at the centenary of the first world conflict, held by the research unit CHAM-A and the University of the Azores. Participants are invited to reflect on the reshaping of the Atlantic border separating Europe and America in the context of the Great War. It is our aim to promote multidisciplinary perspectives to the general theme distributed by several thematic panels.
