On the occasion of another anniversary of the beginning of the press in Cape Verde, marked by the launch of the Official Gazette of the Government of Cape Verde in 1842, which at that time also encompassed Guinea, the National Archive Institute of Cape Verde (IANCV) and the International Group for the Study of Colonial Periodical Press of the Portuguese Empire (GIEIPC-IP) are organizing a seminar (in-person and online) dedicated to the theme of Archives and Memories of Cape Verdean and African Press. This theme explores the press as a dynamic space for encounters and ruptures of various visions of power, imposition, and resistance.
Through this seminar, we aim to encourage studies focused on colonial and post-colonial Cape Verdean press, with a particular emphasis on the press originating from spaces and intellectuals related to the Portuguese empire. Additionally, we aim to explore the concept of periodical press as an archive of political and cultural dynamics, encompassing a plurality of perspectives that have contributed to contemporary intellectual history.
