The International Conference «From the South Sea to the Asian Ocean: real and symbolic appropriation of the Pacific (XVI-XIX centuries)» is an initiative promoted by the Research Project «Nueva España: puerta americana al Pacífico asiático (siglos XVI-XVIII», based at the Institute of Historical Investigations - National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and that brings together researchers from the Centre for Geographical Studies of the University of Lisbon (CEG-IGOT-ULisboa), The Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and The National Distance Education University (UNED, Spain), besides the UNAM itself. This Conference is a joint organization between the CEG-IGOT-ULisboa, CHAM and the Portuguese Naval School/Naval Research Centre (CINAV) and follows on from two conferences held within the same Project Research (CSIC, Seville, 2014; UNAM, Mexico DF, 2015).
The International Conference will be organized around five major topics: (1) Ports, traffic and commercial networks; (2) Cultural forms, discourses and circulation of objects; (3) Identity, power and circulation of ideas; (4) Travel, routes and nautical science; (5) Cartography, borders and geopolitical disputes. Along with the Project team, the Conference also bring together a group of researchers linked to Portuguese and Spanish institutions that work related matters and that will present papers on topics that have been the subject of their latest research. It is intended to raise a broad discussion on the current state of research in the selected topics, strengthen interdisciplinary approaches and stimulate new international partnerships - namely Latin American - among all the involved experts.
The organizers will promote the digital edition of the papers presented at the Conference.
