Cities offer paradigms within the history of civilization. They embody ideal forms of social life; they serve as imperial capitals as well as centres of national, cultural and religious identity; they are the hubs of economic and political development. We are interested in each of these forms. Many cities may be thought of as paradigmatic: Athens or Rome from the world of Classical Antiquity; Venice and Florence reflecting the dynamic transformations of the Renaissance; London, Paris and Berlin, as the capitals of Modernity; New York, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo, Shanghai as epitomes of the new sprawling metropoleis. Of particular interest to this conference is the role and development of the emergence of ‘new’ Balkan cities in the late 19 century (e.g. Bucharest, “le petit Paris des Balcans”). While Western cities echo their avatars from the Classical and Christian worlds, we should also include those cities from non-European cultures and history: Mecca, Istanbul, Agra, and Beijing.
