Captain Salgueiro Maia, His Newspaper, and the Power of Humor

Captain of the April Revolution Salgueiro Maia entered the Military Academy in 1964, began studying Anthropology in 1969 during the Academic Crisis, and participated in the Colonial War between 1967 and 1973. Did these experiences and environments shape his intellectual and political evolution? João Pedro Ferreira discusses these and other episodes of Salgueiro Maia's life, recovering his writings, notably in the company newspaper he commanded in Guinea, "Os Progressistas," in a project in collaboration with the Army Library. João Pedro Ferreira also addresses the subversive acts of the military during the war, the importance of humor, and its corrosive impact on the system..

João Pedro Ferreira is an integrated researcher at CHAM, with a PhD in History and Theory of Ideas, with a thesis titled "Punishing with Laughter: Humor in Periodical Press in Portugal (1797-1835)." With a Master's degree in Cultural and Political History, he is the author of several books, chapters, and articles, having received funding from FCT and FLAD. He is also a journalist, contributing to various publications.
