Virtual Reality: Creation of 3D environments applied to Heritage

Virtual Reality (VR) is a powerful digital technique that creates 3D virtual environments of objects, spaces, and historical sites. These immersive environments allow users to feel like they are physically present in the space, making it a valuable tool for education, scientific research, and tourism. Many research groups, museum teams, interpretation centers, and archaeological sites use VR to preserve cultural heritage, document objects, and disseminate information. VR is also a high-impact resource for tourism. To create these virtual environments, methods like virtual realization, digital photogrammetry, virtual restoration, video editing, and infographics are used. These techniques have advanced significantly and are now used in scientific research related to architecture, urbanism, landscaping, arts, and heritage. While VR has many benefits, there are challenges and limitations that must be considered to produce reliable results. VR can lead to a loss of perceived reality, making it challenging to distinguish virtual experiences from real ones. Additionally, the selective and often hypothetical nature of the historical elements chosen can lead to a loss of information and oversimplification. Over-reliance on virtual environments can lead to a lack of interest in real objects, too. Given the potential of VR and the technical, scientific, and cultural challenges it presents, it's important to question the role of heritage virtualization in training and scientific research. It's also important to consider the methods and processes used to obtain reliable results.
