This workshop aims to stimulate the knowledge of ancient West Asian contexts, particularly the Mesopotamian one, by focusing on one of its main languages. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Learn about the historical contexts of the uses of the Sumerian language and its rediscovery;
2. Understand how cuneiform writing works and recognise various signs for deciphering simple sentences and texts;
3. Know and master essential Sumerian vocabulary;
4. Understand the basic and structuring elements of the grammar, morphology and syntax of the Sumerian language;
5. Translate short royal inscriptions from Ur III (c. 2112-2004 BC).
