«A Brief Introduction to… » Sumerian-Akkadian Mythologies

The invention of writing gives us access to textual traditions that show the mythologies of ancient Mesopotamia, a civilizational space that corresponds to present-day Iraq and Syria. However, as Isabel Gomes de Almeida tell us, these narratives were told and transmitted in multiple ways over time, in a region shaped by the interaction of several human groups with different cultural backgrounds. Given that these mythologies were also conceived and transmitted through oral tradition, material and iconographic cultures, and other symbolic-performative elements, it is necessary to involve scholars from different disciplines to better analyze the rich and wide information that these mythological sources convey.

Isabel Gomes de Almeida is an Assistant Professor of the History Department at NOVA FCSH, where she teaches BA courses, MA  and PhD seminars related to Ancient History. She is an integrated researcher at CHAM - Centre for the Humanities. Her research falls within the scope of the History of Religions, focusing mainly on ancient Western Asia contexts. In these, she explores the processes of construction of mythical-ritual discourses, shaped by encounters, negotiations, borrowings and syncretisms between different religious and cultural traditions.

The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco.
