«A Brief Introduction to… » Blue Humanities

Cristina Brito explores how human history can be told through the lens of the natural world, particularly through the field of Blue Humanities. In this episode of A Brief Introduction to..., part of «CHAM Talks: A Podcast for Listening to Science», she explains the concept of Blue Humanities and discusses how humans have interacted with aquatic environments over the centuries. Using whales as a case study, she illustrates how scientific and artistic perspectives can be brought together to understand these relationships.

Cristina Brito is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at NOVA FCSH, Deputy Director of CHAM, and Deputy Vice-Dean for Research at NOVA FCSH. She is the Principal Investigator of the ERC Synergy Grant project 4-OCEANS (2021–2027) and has led two Bilateral Initiatives under the EEA Grants. She holds a PhD in History, a Master’s in Ethology, and a degree in Marine Biology. A member of several international networks, including the UNESCO Chair on the Cultural Heritage of Oceans and the Oceans Past Initiative, she has published widely. Her latest book, Humans and Aquatic Animals in Early Modern America and Africa, was released by Amsterdam University Press and is available in open access.
