«A Brief Introduction to… » Industrial Archaeology, with Leonor Medeiros

Archaeology is often associated with uncovering traces of ancient times. But that’s not the case with industrial archaeology, which focuses on societies from the Industrial Revolution onwards. Its main concern lies in the 19th and 20th centuries, as Leonor Medeiros explains in the “Brief Introduction to...” segment of CHAM Talks: a podcast for listening to science. The researcher highlights how industrial archaeologists can establish direct dialogue with the communities they study, drawing on people’s personal and collective memories. “Community archaeology helps people reconnect with heritage that’s theirs — we’re just the mediators,” she adds.

Leonor Medeiros is an archaeologist, Assistant Professor in the History Department at NOVA FCSH, and a researcher at CHAM. She holds a PhD in Heritage and Industrial Archaeology from Michigan Technological University (USA) and a Master’s in Heritage Management from the Ironbridge International Institute for Cultural Heritage (University of Birmingham, UK). She is President of the Portuguese Association for Industrial Archaeology (APAI) and serves on the Board of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH). Her main areas of expertise include heritage inventories, documentation of built heritage, and cultural landscapes, particularly in connection with post-industrial communities.

The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco.
