«A Brief Introduction to… » sesmarias e o seu regime no império português
Created in the Middle Ages under King Ferdinand, the sesmarias constituted a genuine land reform and had a significant impact on how Atlantic territories within the Portuguese empire were settled from the early modern period onwards. Rute Gregório explains how the sesmarias influenced land ownership, the formation of family estates, the varying scale of landholdings across different territories, cases of expropriation, and how all this shaped the forms of land tenure still present today..
Rute Gregório is Assistant Professor at the University of the Azores, where she also serves as Pro-Rector for Alumni and Cultural Projects, and is a researcher at CHAM – Centre for the Humanities. She holds a PhD in History (with the thesis “Land and Fortune: the early stages of human settlement on the island of Terceira (1450?–1550)”) and a Master’s in Documentation. Her work focuses on the early history of the Azores, particularly from social and economic perspectives.
