The Roman city of Miróbriga and its dynamics in the Iberian Peninsula, with José Carlos Quaresma

The ruins of Miróbriga, near Santiago do Cacém, have been a source of curiosity since the Renaissance, but it was not until the 1980s that they began to be studied using modern archaeological methods. José Carlos Quaresma tells us about the fieldwork involving stratigraphic records and academic publications on this Roman city and its importance in the economic network of the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula. He also recalls special features of Miróbriga, such as its connection to the sea and agricultural areas, its well-preserved hippodrome and the absence of walls. The CHAM professor and researcher highlights the conclusions of the analysis of ceramic studies such as terra sigillata, which is more accurate than the carbon-14 technique: Miróbriga followed the economic dynamics and rhythms of Roman cities during the Republican phase, until it ceased to be inhabited in the 6th century, during the Visigothic period. The interview is conducted by Joana Rodrigues.

Coordinator of the CHAM research group ‘Representations, discourses, materialities and uses of the past’, José Carlos Quaresma is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at NOVA FCSH and Principal Investigator of the project ‘TabMir. The commercial areas of Miróbriga (1st-6th centuries)’. His research has focused on the typological and stratigraphic study of fine ceramics and amphorae from the Roman imperial period and late antiquity in the Atlantic area of the Iberian Peninsula and the western Mediterranean.

In the next episode, we resume the series ‘A brief introduction to...’ with Rodrigo Banha da Silva. The researcher introduces us to the archaeology of death.
