Media and «artificial intelligence», with Catarina Rodrigues
Catarina Rodrigues discusses the consequences of the widespread presence of so-called «artificial intelligence» on individuals and society, pointing out that «machines», technologies and algorithms are neither neutral nor objective, being used in decision-making that has a huge impact, such as dismissals, the allocation of subsidies or work from digital platforms, or even in messages inciting hatred and violence. The CHAM research collaborator also addresses the asymmetry of power between individuals and those who hold their data, the role of the media in this scenario, and the importance of media literacy.
Catarina Rodrigues is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of the Azores and director of the Communication and Public Relations course at this institution. She is a researcher at LabCom – Communication Laboratory of the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and a collaborator at CHAM – Centre for Humanities (UAc). She holds a PhD in Communication Sciences from UBI. Among other topics, she has researched journalism and new media. She is currently a member of the MemNews project – Oral history and memory(ies) of news consumption and reception practices and the experience of news in Portugal based on citizens' testimonies./p>
