«A Brief Introduction to…» silence and silencing, with Luana Loria

Luana Loria reflects on the concept of silence in this episode of «CHAM Talks», focusing on the silences that characterize the literary and academic fields. Drawing on the theoretical work of authors such as Audre Lorde, Gayatri Spivak, Guilherme Le Blanc, Judith Butler, Athena Athanasiou, and Donna Haraway, the researcher presents possible forms of resistance to silence in the literary field—citing examples such as the «Cartonera» movement, independent publishers, self-publishing, and digital distribution—and in the academic field, where she suggests collaborative and participatory methodologies, feminist epistemologies, and action research grounded in the ethics of care as means of breaking systemic silence. The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco.

Luana Loria is a researcher at CHAM, holds a Ph.D. in Humanities (Federal University of Santa Catarina), and a master’s degree in “Crossways in Cultural Narratives” (University of Santiago de Compostela, Nova University of Lisbon, and University of Sheffield). She participates in the “HUMAN: Digital Hate Interrupter Activism” project, which aims to combat structural racism and promote inter-community cooperation through digital technologies. She is a co-founder of the Livraria das Insurgentes project, based in Lisbon and dedicated to promoting books written by women, trans people, and non-binary individuals. Her areas of interest include literature, film, philosophy, education, history, cultural studies, gender studies, cultural geography, urban studies, and postcolonial and decolonial studies.

In the next episode, Daniela Spina discusses portrayals of young people in the press and in colonial fiction.
