The VIII Encontro de Boas Práticas Museológicas, which will take place this year on the island of Madeira from 21 to 24 October, is jointly organised by the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment and Culture / the Regional Directorate for Culture of Madeira and CHAM (Centre for the Humanities, a research unit linked to the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and the University of the Azores), aims to discuss contemporary museum practice under the theme: Peripheries, challenges of networking: between the local and the global.
Under the theme ‘Peripheries, challenges of networking: between the local and the global’, this edition offers an in-depth reflection on contemporary museum practice, with a particular focus on the specific characteristics of archipelagic territories and the challenges faced by peripheral regions in a global context. Current and relevant topics will be addressed, such as heritage preservation in disaster contexts, the impact of artificial intelligence on museums, the participation of young audiences and the construction of identities, as well as structural issues linked to collection management, museography and the musealisation of intangible heritage. The event aims to reinforce the importance of collaborative and networked work, bringing together professionals from the fields of heritage and museology to discuss the sector’s main challenges.
