«A Brief Introduction to…» The History of Animals, with Nina Vieira
Is it possible to write the history of animals? What are the main sources used by historians? This is the starting point for our conversation with Nina Vieira, who briefly explains what the History of Animals is in this episode of the «A Brief Introduction to…» series on «CHAM Talks». «The History of Animals is dedicated to the study of the relationships between humans and other animals and documents the impact that animals have had on human cultures, languages, technology, and environments», says the researcher. Nina Vieira also highlights the consequences of human practices on the lives and cultures of other animals, showing that there is a history of interconnected stories between different species, both human and non-human. The interview is conducted by Isabel Araújo Branco.
Nina Vieira is an environmental historian and a assistant researcher at NOVA FCSH, through the CHAM - Center for the Humanities. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology, a master’s degree in Marine Ecology, and a Ph.D. in History. She is the Principal Investigator of the FCT exploratory project «ANIMALx - Animals of Lisbon: Tracking the presence and role of (non-human) animals in the history and landscape of the city». She is a member of the «4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life» project team and the UNESCO Chair «The Ocean’s Cultural Heritage». She holds management positions, notably as deputy director of CHAM and Regional Representative for Portugal at the ESEH - European Society for Environmental History.
