Languages and the World: Translation Enterprises of Imperial Knowledge and Politics in the 16th Century
National Library of Portugal

This conference aims to explore, from various disciplinary and methodological perspectives, the complexity of the translation process within imperial institutions, across their diverse spheres of activity - as agents of knowledge translation about and from the world.

Historical approaches to translation, understood as a process not only of transmission but also of knowledge production, have seen significant development in recent decades, particularly regarding the “circulation” paradigm used to characterize the 16th century and its transformations on a global scale.

From different disciplinary and methodological perspectives, historiographical reflection on the complexity of the translation process has been open and rich: ranging from its protagonists (the text and the people who “translate” it) to the audience that appropriates the result of their work, passing through the social fabric of the actors who constitute their networks and the mediators and means of communication that support it.
