Rui Loureiro holds a PhD in History from the Universidade de Lisboa (1995). He is currently a professor at ISMAT - Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes, in Portimão. He is a researcher at CHAM - Centro de Humanidades, a research centre at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. And he is also a member of the Navy Academy, the Portuguese Navy academic institution. He is the author of more than a hundred academic publications (including books, book chapters, articles in scientific journals, communications in conference proceedings, etc.) on the history of Portugal and Spain's relations with the Asian world in the 16th and 17th centuries. He has also dedicated himself to editing Portuguese and Spanish sources from that period on the Asian world. Among his most recent books, the following can be highlighted: a new edition of the Itinerário da Índia por terra a este reino de Portugal by António Tenreiro, published in 2020 by Livros de Bordo; a new edition of the Tratado das coisas da China by Gaspar da Cruz, published in 2021 by Público, in association with A Bela e o Monstro; and a new edition of the Colóquios dos simples e drogas e coisas medicinais da Índia by Garcia de Orta, in collaboration with Teresa Nobre de Carvalho, published by the Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste in 2024.
