In the course of its long history, melancholy has revealed a very wide range of manifestations and the very meaning of melancholy is the subject of enormous disparities. Qualified as divine or demonic, morbid passion or the expression of a superior ingenuity, it proves to be extremely ambivalent. This plurality of modes and figures of melancholy is particularly evident in the Renaissance period, during which melancholy acquired the status of a hugely relevant cultural phenomenon.
The Modes of Melancholy Seminar aims at creating a multidisciplinary space for exchange, reflection and debate between researchers with diverse approaches to the melancholic phenomenon. From a historical point of view, this Seminar will particularly focus on the Renaissance period, taking into account the historical dynamics of human affections and thought.
