Until the early 20th century, women were still expected to engage in delicate and sentimental art, confined to the intimate sphere of the home. Female artistic work was considered amateurish, particularly in the Ibero-American context where the predominantly Catholic culture reinforced the expectation that women should fulfill only the roles of mother and wife. In the artistic field, the barriers that confined women to 'art within the home' were only effectively broken in the latter half of the 20th century. However, in terms of criticism, a paternalistic and discriminatory attitude persisted. This Cycle aims to highlight female painters who were particularly active in the Ibero-American world and who, from the late Renaissance to the present day, have contributed to reducing gender prejudice and dismantling a series of stereotypes in the art world.
