This edition compiles a set of studies on Atlantic insular slavery, primarily seeking to draw attention to a phenomenon that, in the Azores, has remained somewhat on the fringes of historiographical debate. On the other hand, it also mattered to cross different territorial approaches in order to understand the phenomenon from a broader and more comprehensive perspective. In this sense, studies on the Azores, Cape Verde and São Tomé, as well as on the respective sources, served as a basis for discovering these ‘anonymous’ people of history who, paradoxically, supported and built major Atlantic societies.
