De Macau a Lisboa, na rota das porcelanas Ming
Research for this book was essentially centred on data obtained through archaeological work. This approach provides an exciting insight into the whole process of Chinese porcelain trading and transaction in the 16th and 17th centuries, based on buried and submerged material remains, within a still underdeveloped research area. An additional motivating aspect is the fact that it deals with different archaeological contexts. On the one hand, materials recovered in Macau, a major Chinese porcelain exporting centre, from religious and nobility contexts as well as from a trading area. On the other hand, Portuguese assemblages recovered in the Lisbon area, a major importer and recipient of these Asian ceramics, namely along the riverfront, the former Corte-Reais palace, and Rua da Judiaria, in Almada. And lastly, the means of transportation, i.e. the link connecting these two centres by sea: one of the ‘India Run’ ships, presumably the Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, lost at the entrance to the Tagus River with all its valuable cargo, in sight of its final destination.
