Knowledge and Recognition in Areas of Portuguese Influence is a project from the Institute of Tropical Research (IICT) funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the framework of the History of Science Programme, partnered with the Portuguese Centre for Global History (CHAM, FCSH-NOVA/UAç) and the Centre for Administration and Public Policies (CAPP - ISCSP-UL).
The project aims to retrieve the historical information concerning natural resources, biodiversity, traditional knowledge and practices in order to demonstrate the current importance of this information to countries of the CPLP [Community of Portuguese Language Speaking Countries], specifically in Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, S. Tomé and Príncipe, Mozambique and East Timor. The project seeks a comparative and multidisciplinary, historical, sociological and ethnobotanical, approach to the different geographical spaces where scientific missions were developed (XVIII-XX centuries) and on which the IICT has a documentary asset and relevant material, for its contextualisation and revaluation in the global space, while simultaneously pointing to preservation issues of identity, knowledge, values and dignified living standards of the local communities in the face of globalisation.
Regarding the topic of traditional knowledge, the project goals are to better understand, disseminate, acknowledge and identify this traditional wisdom and practices, especially those that could contribute to alternative thinking in regard to the well-being of the populations of these countries.
Goals
All activities as well as work results, including publications, scientific events and proceedings of workshops, seminars, conferences and congresses, can be found at the official website of the project. In summary, we highlight:
•The creation of a historical and geographical Document Corpus on the focused regions and themes;
•Structuring and development of thematic databases in regard to geographical and historical information collected and its availability online and/or in digital format;
•Release of information relating to the assets of IICT;
•The search of situations in which the retrieval of traditional knowledge and techniques may lead, in the aforementioned countries, to a starting point for the development of projects aimed at improving the living conditions and well-being of the populations;
•Preparation and publication of studies based on the information gathered in order to assess their impact in solving current problems/situations.
