Historian and novelist. Professor of the Department of History since 1990 (PhD, 1998), where he teaches disciplines and seminars about Portuguese Overseas Expansion in Early Modern Age, the beginning of globalisation, history of Ancient Asia and Global History of the Humanity. Coordinator of the Unesco Chair "The Ocean´s Heritage". Main specialisation in History of Portugal and the world in the 15th and 16th centuries, and History of religions and Ancient Asia civilisations. His MA and PhD dissertations were focused on the Portuguese presence in Japan and were complemented by studies on Portuguese nobility and the foundation of the Portuguese "Estado da Índia", and he coordinated FCT funded projects on these topics between 2000 and 2008. Then, the scope of his studies opened to a global view of the 15th and 16th centuries, and recently opened more the scope to the Deep History. He is author of Manuel I (2005) and Henry the navigator (2009) biographies and coordinated and co-authored the sole work that analyse in a sole volume the History of Portuguese Overseas Expansion from its beginning until the end of the 20th century (2014). He is also author of an historical essay of a single author on the History of Portugal (2022), a work which was awarded twice in 2023. He is author of eight historical novels.
